COGS is the constitutionally authorized government for all graduate and professional students at MSU. It is composed of one representative and an alternate from each degree granting unit, nine officers, and the graduate student representatives on University committees. COGS’ goals are to: promote and enhance the academic, economic and social aims for all graduate and professional students; establish effective communication among these students and the academic/administrative units of the University; and create channels of effective communication with other student organizations. Services for graduate and graduate professional students include:

COGS Copy Service provides self-service copying starting at 4¢ per page. Service includes two-sided copying, color copying, enlargement/reduction 8½ x 11, 8½ x 14 and 11 x 17 copies, automatic document feeder and collator. Cash or check only.

COGS Loan Programs  Interest-free loans of $500 for 60 days are administered through the Office of Financial Aid, 252 Student Services Building. Interest-free loans of $300 for 8 weeks are administered through the ASMSU Business Office, Student Services Building, Room 307.

Legal Aid COGS provides for legal aid through Student Legal Services in 329 Student Services Building. They can be reached at (517) 353-3716 to schedule an appointment. Consultations also available via Skype.

GSO Event Funding Requests – Graduate groups and organizations are encouraged to apply for funding. Applications and guidelines are available online at http://cogs.msu.edu/resources/funding/.

GSO Support Funding – If you have a departmental graduate student organization (GSO) you can apply for up to $150 to help with meeting costs when you meet to elect your COGS representative. Application is online: http://cogs.msu.edu/resources/funding/.

Conference Awards – To help defray the costs of traveling to and from conferences where a student will be presenting, COGS provides up to $300 in the form of a Conference Award. Information and applications can be found online at http://cogs.msu.edu/resources/funding/. Up to $300 can be awarded once during a graduate lifetime.

Professional Development Awards – This program is intended to support graduate/professional students attend event  or engage in activities that enhance their professional development. The maximum amount awarded is $500. Information and applications are available at http://cogs.msu.edu/resources/funding/.

COGS Childcare Endowment – COGS will provide a limited number of $500-$1000 awards per semester to eligible graduate/professional students who apply for the MSU Child Care Grant but are ineligible for that program. The COGS program is open to international graduate students and law students. Graduate students who would like to apply for COGS Childcare Endowment should check the box on the MSU Child Care Grant application indicating your interest in being considered for these funds. To maximize the number of students eligible for childcare assistance, priority will be given to students who are ineligible for the MSU Child Care Grant. Please note that students must be enrolled at least half time in a degree granting program and demonstrate financial need to be eligible for this program as well. COGS Disciplinary Leadership Awards – In 2010, the MSU Council of Graduate Students (COGS) established an endowment to recognize disciplinary leadership by graduate and grad-professional students. The Graduate School now provides additional funds for this program. Graduate students regularly (not provisionally or lifelong) enrolled in a graduate or grad-professional program at MSU and who are in good standing in their programs may apply for the COGS Disciplinary Leadership Award. Discounted Meal Plans – COGS offers discounted Meal Plans for Graduate and Professional Students which are available for purchase on the COGS website, www.cogs.msu.edu.* Use Meal access to bring friends, family and guests to eat with you at the many dining options available. *Must be purchased in bundles of 10, 5 bundles per grad student form COGS per transaction, and must be used at least once during the fiscal year.
